Welly Wednesday-Frog Spawn

30th Apr 2020

Hi Everyone,

I hope that you are all doing well. I decided to go and have a wee check on our tadpoles yesterday evening while the sun came out for a little while.

I could see them swimming away and I noticed how they have grown a little since last week. While I was taking the video a few little pond skaters were on top of the water. I wonder if you can spot them? How many can you count?

Pond skaters are one of the easiest bugs that you can spot around a pond because they can walk on water!!! You can see why it's called that - it looks like it is skating on top of the water. If we tried that we would just sink!!!hehehe...

Also known as skaters these bugs can skate, jump and fly. We know they are insects because they have six legs. There are four long bendy legs which they use to skate on the water and the two short legs at the front of their bodies help them to catch other smaller insects that fall into the pond for their lunch. They have their wings tucked away on their backs. They can skate really fast- just look at them go!!!

I wonder will we see anything different at the pond next week?

Take care everyone!

Lots of Love,

Ms. Deery
