Ms. Deery meets 'The Donkeys'

1st Feb 2021

Hi Everyone,

I thought I would share the beautiful pictures and videos of the donkeys that I met when I was out for a walk yesterday.

Here are some interesting facts about Donkeys:

Donkeys are members of the Equidae family, which also includes horses and zebras.

Donkeys range from white to grey or black in color. They usually have a dark stripe from the mane to the tail and a crosswise stripe on the shoulders. The mane is short and upright, and the tail has long hair only at the end. The ears are very long and are dark at the base and tip.

Donkeys are very social and usually live in a group called a herd. They like to have company and usually have a best friend. They love to play and have lots of fun. Donkeys are very calming and they can often be found in the field with other types of animal - like a herd of cows. It is said that they bring a sense of calmness.

Donkeys are odourless - which means that they do not smell. After petting a donkey you won't have a smell off your hands like you would if you had been petting a horse.

Male donkeys are called jacks and females are called jennets or jennies. Females give birth once a year. A baby donkey is called a called foal.

Donkeys like to eat grass, though they also eat shrubs and desert plants. Instead of ripping the grass right away with their teeth, donkeys grab the plant with their lips, pull it in their mouth, then rip it with their flat teeth and grind it down for swallowing.

A donkey can carry heavy loads over rough land. The donkey can handle the uneven ground of the mountains better than a horse can.

Donkeys can live up to 50 years.

Funny facts about Donkeys:

  • China has more donkeys than any other country in the world.
  • In the U.S., donkeys are kept as pets or to breed mules.
  • A mule is a cross between a donkey and a horse.
  • A boy donkey is called a jack.
  • Donkeys make a loud braying noise that goes on for several seconds.
