Welly Wednesday - The Bog
7th May 2020
A view from the Bog.
This is Bog Cotton.
The bog cotton feels soft- just like cotton wool.
The peat on the bog.
The bog is very high up and very quiet.
The white dots are bog cotton.
What a view.
Farmer Mickey on his tractor for the bog.
Check out those wheels.
This is the machine for cutting the turf.
This helps to cut a deep hole into the ground for the turf to come up to the top.
The turf is cut in lines of three.
Freshly cut turf that will be left to dry. You can see that it is very dark in colour because it is wet.
When the turf dries it looks like this. It is not wet anymore.
Now the turf is ready too be stacked- which is called ' foot the turf'.
Here is Barry - ' footing the turf'.
Here is Bernie ' footing the turf'.
This is what they are doing when they' foot the turf'. They are stacking the pieces against each other so that they will dry standing up.
Here you can see they are all done and will be just left to dry now.
When it is dry, it is time to put the turf into bags to take it home.
This piece is ready for the fire.
These bags of turf are ready to be brought home on the tractor.
